DavidDr. David J. Edelman is Professor of Planning at the School of Planning; College of Design, Architecture, Art and Planning at the University of Cincinnati. He was formerly Chairman of theDepartment of Urban Environmental Management at the Institute for Housing and Urban Development Studies (IHS), Rotterdam and Director of its Centre for the Urban Environment. With 35 years of experience in urban and regional planning, energy planning and urban environmental management, he has been a technical expert/project manager in 45 countries for both Swiss and American consulting engineering firms. Professionally certified in the US, Switzerland and the Netherlands, he is a Fellow of the American Institute of Certified Planners (FAICP).

ABSTRACT

This paper summarizes the report of a graduate level workshop that was conducted at the School of Planning, College of Architecture, Art and Planning, University of Cincinnati, USA. The objective of the project was to prepare students to work overseas in data-poor environments as professional consulting planners. The class of eighteen students operated in sector-level working groups to prepare a 5-year plan to solve the urban environmental problems of Mysore, India, utilizing a real-world data base and a limited budget. This project culminated in the preparation of a professional quality plan.
